Why gain experience working with students?
Teaching isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a challenging career that takes creativity, collaboration and problem solving. Luckily, you have plenty of opportunities to work with students of all ages as part of paid tutoring, summer internships or volunteer programs.
Apply to a pre-teaching opportunity to:
- Get classroom experience before committing yourself to the career.
- Practice teaching strategies, lesson planning, classroom management and more.
- Make connections in local schools and meet current educators.

Breakthrough Houston has a two-fold mission: to prepare high-achieving, underserved students for college prep high schools and college, and to inspire and train the next generation of teachers.
Paid positions for: High school students, college students and recent grads.
Time commitment: Full time during the 8-week program, June 7 through August 4.

Help high school students understand high-demand careers! Every week BridgeYear provides students with career experiences through hands-on simulations. Students gain more clarity on career options and next steps after graduation for careers that can provide economic mobility and independence.
Paid positions for: College students
Time commitment: A minimum of 8 hours per week throughout the school year.

HYPE Freedom SchoolLearn More
HYPE provides enrichment to K-8th grade students who need summer learning the most, but whose families can afford it the least. The HYPE program is designed to help readers and non-readers fall in love with reading and learning. The national Integrated Reading Curriculum focuses on the theme I Can Make A Difference and it strives to excite, delight, enchant and rejuvenate the students.
Paid positions for: High school graduates, college students and recent college graduates.
Time commitment: Full time during the 6-week program, June 15—July 23, plus two weeks of training.

iEducate works with public school elementary students to accelerate their academic growth. College students are paired with a certified teacher in the classroom to help address the learning needs of students. College students get training, coaching and classroom experience to better prepare aspiring teachers to become effective educators upon graduation.
Paid and volunteer positions for: High school graduates, undergrads and graduate students.
Time commitment: Two full days or two half days per week, September through May.

Inspiring, developing and growing the next generation of Black male educators in Houston schools through a paid summer fellowship opportunity for Black male undergraduates interested in working in education from accredited colleges/universities and community colleges in the Houston area.

SWAG to College has partnered with Rose M Avalos P-TECH school to provide their high school education pathway students with a career mentor. This program aims to increase post-secondary matriculation rates and job readiness skills.
