There are two routes to become certified: the traditional route that involves completing a bachelor’s degree and teacher preparation program, and the alternative route for candidates following non-traditional pathways to the classroom. Teaching English as a Second Language is a high-demand subject of instruction that continues to grow in Alief ISD. As children from foreign countries continue to immigrate to our community and enroll in our schools, the number of students whose native language is not English continues to grow. Thus, many of our campuses serve English Language Learners (ELL). In order to appropriately meet the academic needs of our ELL students, we require all of our teachers to become ESL certified within the first two years of employment.

The Teachers as Future Educators (TAFE) is a strong program across the district that does an excellent job of promoting the teaching profession to high school students. Through this program, students are able to obtain hands-on experience in the classroom. The district's leader of this program, Andrea Lotsu, was honored as the District's Secondary Teacher of the Year for the 2017-18 school year. Many of her students were present at the ceremony in which she received this award.

If you have 31 to 60 College credits, you will work as a Paraprofessional Apprentice for about 3 years while taking college classes and on-the-job training.

You will be expected to complete your academic study at a partnered university or college in a degree program.

If you have 61 to 90 College credits, you will work as a Paraprofessional Apprentice for about 2 years while taking college classes and on-the-job training.

You will be expected to complete your academic study at a partnered university or college in a degree program.

If you are in your final year of college or you have a completed bachelor's degree, you will work as a Resident Apprentice for 1 year while enrolled in a certification program through an industry partner to earn your teacher certification and complete your training.
