TEACH for Houston coaches are certified teachers. If you’re new to teaching, they can help you with questions like:
- How do I know if teaching is right for me?
- How do I get certified to teach?
- How do I choose a teaching program?
- Anything else you want to know!
Plus, when you sign up with a coach, you’ll get access to every TEACH for Houston product and service — all completely free.
Group Advising
Not sure if a 1-on-1 call is right for you? Group advising sessions are also a great way to learn about becoming a teacher.
Group sessions are held monthly and cover topics like:
- Steps to a teaching certificate and how to choose your subject area
- How to choose a teaching pathway and program
- How to get career and financial support from TEACH for Houston
Every group call includes a Q&A session! Bring any questions that are top-of-mind for you. You can always schedule a 1-on-1 call if you think of more questions later.
To join a group session: Click the “Sign Up” button to open the group advising Eventbrite page. There, you can click “Select a date” and choose the session that works best with your schedule.

Sign Up for Coaching
Scheduling a coaching session is easy! Just follow these simple steps:
- Scroll down to read bios for all TEACH for Houston coaches.
- Click “Sign Up” to create your free TEACH for Houston account. You’ll be redirected to our coaching request form.
- Fill out the form to select your preferred coach and time slot!
Coaching is available to anyone brand-new to teaching — without a teaching credential or experience as a lead teacher in any state — who is living in the U.S., or is a U.S. citizen living abroad. If you’re not eligible for coaching, you can learn more about becoming a Houston teacher with the TEACH for Houston Certification Guide or from the Texas Education Agency.
Meet the Coaches
Ricca is a high school English and ESL teacher in the Houston Independent School District. She received her B.A. in American Studies from Sewanee: The University of the South, and her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Arlington. Ricca has served in education as a literacy teacher, consultant, reading interventionist, and instructional coach. She also participated in an alternative certification program. She is certified in (4-8) Generalists, (EC-12) ESL, and (EC-12) Reading Specialists.
Athenya is currently a High School Family Consumer Science teacher. She's also a former Second Grade teacher with fifthteen plus years of teaching experience. Athenya was named Teacher of the Year (2018-2019). She received her M.Ed in Instructional Design and Technology from West Texas A & M University. She also participated in an alternative certification program. She’s certified in (EC-4) Generalists and Family Consumer Science (6-12). Athenya is eager to share her expertise with future teachers.
Elena is a dedicated and passionate educator with 19 years of experience in education, committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for students to thrive. She believes in the power of education to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and personal growth. She is very enthusiastic and looks forward to helping you explore different options to join the teaching profession.
