University of Houston-Downtown

About

The University of Houston-Downtown is a comprehensive four-year university offering bachelor's and master's degree programs aimed at career preparation.

We’re located right in the heart of Downtown Houston, one of the nation’s most culturally diverse metropolitan areas. So naturally, we’ve created an environment that welcomes and embraces students from all backgrounds. We are proud to be recognized nationally as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Minority-Serving Institution.

With a 20-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, we provide a unique hands-on learning environment for each student. They can choose from face-to-face instruction downtown or on our satellite locations, degrees and classes offered completely online and even a combination of the two.

Best of all, we offer everything for one of the lowest tuition rates among state colleges and universities.

We thought you’d like that. And we think you’ll love UHD.

Program Info

At the Department of Urban Education, we are developing teachers who will lay the foundation for the Houston of tomorrow. Our program is in partnership with Houston-area school districts to prepare future teachers who will enhance the academic success for at-risk children and adolescents in urban schools

Because Houston has one of the most diverse student populations in the United States, we know we need teachers from all backgrounds. That's why we've designed a program that is flexible to fit your needs, whether you're a community college transfer student, a working adult heading back to school, or an incoming freshman. Many of our students are working mature adults who find our variety of night, day, online, and weekend classes attractive. UHD is one of a few schools that accept transfer credits, regardless of age. In other words, your college credits don't ever expire!

Graduates from our program go on to teach a variety of subjects from Early Childhood Education through high school.

As one of the nation's most linguistically diverse cities, we know teachers will be best prepared (and most attractive to employers!) if they can successfully work with students and families whose first language is not English. That's why all of our graduates will be obtain an "English as a Supplemental Language" supplemental degree in addition to the certification area of their choice.

We also equip each student with an electronic portfolio which stays with you after graduation, and serves as a strong personal marketing source-portfolio for job interviews.
